EPHEDRINE HYDROCHLORIDE (C6H5CHOHCH(CH3)NHCH3 HCL, a[1-(methylamino) ethyl]benzyl alcohol hydrochloride)

Melting point:187-188 C
Soluble in:water (1gm/4ml), (insoluble in diethyl ether)
Toxidity:oral LD50 (mouse) 400 mg/kg
Sold OTC as:truck stops (Mini Thins, MaxAlert, etc.)
Uses:bronchiodialator (for asthma)
Caution:decomposes into toxic fumes at higher temperatures
Notes:pure ephedrine is no longer available otc in the U.S.; current otc varieties usually have guiafenesin
slightly stronger that ephedrine sulfate
pure ephedrine can be converted into methcathinone
now a controlled substance in the US
